fall fashion preview 1

Fall Fashion Preview

This fall it feels like fashion is finally pushing past the 90’s basics we’ve all embraced and loved over the past few seasons. Ruffles, suede, and prints are back in full swing. It truly feels like a season where experimentation, pushing boundaries, and style where anything goes. Whether it’s a floral pattern you’ve been hesitant to wear or some of the best flats you’ve seen in awhile, this season is all about embracing a relaxed and smart style.

Every year when fall season rolls around I can’t wait. I push my sandals and light tanks to the back, embracing new looks that come with the cooler nights and longer evenings. This year, I’ve added a few staples and absolutely love what I’ve come to find. This year I’ve added a pair of the best cut out flats, olive distressed skinny jeans, and a lightweight wrinkled white button up. They’re perfect pieces that I will wear over and over again.

What’s In My Bag: A Midwest Wedding Weekend

This weekend I’m taking a long weekend to celebrate a college bestie and a wedding weekend in the midwest. I decided to bring you all along, as I share what’s inside my bag. From light layers to a simple palette, these pieces are perfect for the fall season and can be worn again and again, far after a special occasion. The best part? With a bit of smart packing it all fits into a weekender bag.

01. For the Plane

If you’re anything like me, you might find that air conditioning on planes is a bit too much to handle. Because of this, I love wearing a popover with distressed skinnies. Paired with a pair of classic Nike’s it’s perfect for early mornings and long days of travel.

02. The Rehearsal Dinner

With a bit of trendy accessories, elevate a chambray shirtdress for a night with brews, bonfires, and cornhole. We love the cut out flats and can’t wait to use these throughout the fall season. Paired with a bold, geometric earring and a casual up do, enjoy the ease and casual nature of all that the Midwest has to offer.

03. The Wedding Day

Made with chiffon and with pockets, we purchased this dress for a graduation and have worn it to two weddings since. It’s a lightweight material perfect for summer and early fall and in a navy shade, its spanned the seasons flawlessly. By pairing it with a casual zipped bootie, it stays within the wardrobe of the groom’s side, perfect for my role in this wedding.

5 Ways to Freshen Up Your Wardrobe for Free

5 Ways to Freshen Up Your Wardrobe for Free

Fall fashion is rolling out in full force and confession, my minimalist tendencies are deeply battling with my love of all things on-trend and wanting to look on point. This month, I have a lot of big expenses hitting all at once. School bills, business expenses, and medical bills all are coming down the pike this month, making spending excess money on clothes not an option. It’s real, but a slight bummer. Maybe you’ve been there and still want to look amazing. You see new fashion roll out and realize you haven’t gone shopping for anything but basics for years.

Here are 5 free ways to freshen up your wardrobe. That’s right. Free.

Find the full details after the jump!

1. Go do your laundry.

This might sound strange, but think about it for a moment. For many of us, we find we’re slightly discontent with our wardrobe when our favorite pieces are dirty. If you’re single, you might do your laundry every week to week and a half. Wash your clothes and revisit some of your favorites again.

2. Go find the impulse buys in your closet and wear them.

You know those items you pushed yourself to buy and that are hanging with the tags on in your closet? Pull them out and reimagine them. You might have bought this item as a statement piece, but now look at it as too much of a statement piece. Figure out ways to pair neutrals, tops, and bottoms with the purchased item and create a stunning look. Go put that item that makes you feel amazing and rock it!

3. Add a bit of color, pattern, texture, or shine.

After living in the land of minimalism and capsule wardrobes for a few seasons now, it’s easy to get bored day in and day out. Mix up your basics and standards, by layering a few accessories switch out a bag, or wearing a heel during the day that you’d only wear for a night out. Figure out ways to add to old pieces and reimagine them in a fresh way. Need a bit more inspiration? Head to Pinterest. Mix up your look and push yourself. Go find your favorite street style look, and figure out a way to recreate the same vibe with items in your closet. Most likely you’ll come up with something amazing and slightly outside of your norm.

4. Host a clothing swap.

Invite a few of your friends over and host a clothing swap. For every item you place in the swap, you get to bring an item home with you. It’s a great way to get something new to you without spending a dime.

5. Grab a pair of fabric shears and get crafty.

You know that pair of boyfriend jeans where the knees are far too ripped out? Make them a favorite pair of cutoffs for the rest of summer, cut a demi boot or frayed hem or add tassels for visual interest. Have a bit of spare velvet ribbon? Create a velvet choker that’s perfectly on trend. Add a bit of embroidery or patches to a worn out pair of jeans or denim jacket that’s perfect for the fall. Embroider a tee with a simple script saying similar to items seen at Madewell and Anthropologie. Take a tee with a pinholes (anyone else pop holes in their shirt?) and cut it for the perfect tied tee look. Take a scarf or drapey tee and turn it into a kimono.

A Mid Season Capsule

When it comes to the late days of summer, I always find myself living in a unique tension. I love the fashions for early fall, but find myself still in the sweltering days of summer. In light of this I was inspired to go through my closet and put together a mid-season capsule. With neutrals that usher in fall and bid farewell to the final days of summer oh so perfectly.

Lightweight Plaid Shirt from Rails | Silk V-Neck Cami from Everlane | Grid Tie Top
Olive Drape Jacket from Lulus | Olive Distressed Jean from Target | Denim Skirt from Levi’s
Jumpsuit from FashionABLE | Heels from Steve Madden | Crossbody from Target
Mustard Suede Foldover Clutch from FashionABLE | Bridge Sandal from Everlane | Mules from FashionABLE

Lightweight Plaid Top: Perfect for summertime and early fall, we love our Rails shirt. Layer over a graphic tank for hiking or button up with rolled up sleeves and cut offs.

Silk V-Neck Cami: We love basics and this piece is perfect for layering in summertime. With sweltering summer days, layer delicate gold pieces and rings for visual interest while keeping things light.

Grid Tie Top: Ties are back with staying power this fall. Ready to ditch the gather on a tee and make a bit more of statement. Try out the trend with this affordable top.

Olive Jacket: We love this drapey jacket. It is the perfect note of architecture and drape. Over a slip dress, cami, or black midi dress, it’s absolutely stunning.

Distressed Jean: I’ve been eyeing a distressed olive pant for a while now. These jeans are absolutely perfect. With a medium rise, soft denim, and skinny fit, they look smart with almost any combination from chambray to royal blue, to a casual tank and straw hat, it’s a great basic to add to your closet.

Denim Skirt: Remember that denim skirt you lived in as a kid? They’re back and coming in every wash, shape, and style. Paired with basics, it looks smart, fresh, and young. Thinking the style is a bit too much of a throwback? Go with a pencil shape and avoid button downs or snap minis.

Black Jumpsuit: We love our black jumpsuit and go to it time and time again. With flat sandals, it’s an approachable and polished look. With heeled sandals, it’s a smart look for a date night or night out on the town.

Black Heels: You’ve seen these shoes everywhere and with good reason. They’re comfortable, classic and can be paired with anything from skirts to skinnies and smart dresses. With a suede finish, they seamlessly transition to fall.

Gray Crossbody Bag: Play with color and neutrals with this bag. Worn as a crossbody or on your forearm, it says polish and class effortlessly. Due to it’s size, it can hold all of your daily essentials with a fresh approach on a tote bag.

Leather Clutch: This clutch is on point. With geometric handles and a rich mustard color, it’s perfect for the fall season. Pair it with your favorite heels, skinnies, and olive jacket for a look that’s smart and looks amazing.

Bridge Sandal: I picked these up from the Everlane showroom on my trip to New York. I’ve worn them every single day since I purchased them. Probably my favorite purchase of the trip. I was hunting for a sandal that hit the perfect note between sporty and a dressy sandal. By purchasing the black option, I keeps the look elevated. I can’t recommend these sandals more.

Leather Mules: Last summer the mule trend was introduced and has proven its staying power. I love these mules in a nude finish. With a leather upper and wooden stacked heel they’re super comfortable, paired with crop jeans, skirts, and dresses.
