Currently Loving: Glossier

Around here we don’t talk much about makeup but when we do we have a serious love for the products that fill our beauty regimen. When I stumbled upon Glossier products I knew I had met my match. Believing that great skin is essential to any makeup routine, their products focus on light applications and phenomenal products. They bring a fresh approach to makeup, with smart minimal branding, and a message that is perfect for any millennial who loves a more natural approach while wanting a bit more than a bare face.

Boy Brow in Brown: Looking for this season’s trend statement brows, but don’t want to spend countless minutes perfecting it with a powder? Thicker brows are back and here to stay. Boy brow is the perfect way to get this season’s look in one step. With a gel and slight tint it will last all day.

Cherry Balm Dotcom: If those of you who loved your Lipsmackers in the day, meet your new favorite. Balm Dotcom is the perfect dab of moisture for anywhere your skin might need it. Available in multiple tints and flavors, we love the cherry for it’s subtle red tint. It is light and fresh, perfect for sun kissed summer days.

Stretch Concealer:  Say goodbye to days of concealer sitting on your skin, being thick and patchy. This concealer has a light and mousse-like texture while still maintaining necessary coverage.

Invisible Sunscreen in SPF 35: Could a sunscreen feel clean and be clear in texture? This is what Glossier set out to create with the creation of this product. I was honestly skeptical. I’m a fair skinned ginger and have found that most sunscreens have a lot of hype, but don’t deliver. This sunscreen is amazing and a daily part of my beauty routine.

Perfecting Skin Tint: With summer being the season of light makeup, this product evens out skin tone while keeping things dewwy, toned, and smooth. With a light, matte finish it wears well throughout the day, regardless of heat or climate.

Visiting New York? Make sure to visit Glossier’s showroom in SoHo. It was one of our favorite places to shop and well worth the stop.

What I Wore New York

What I Wore: NYC

When packing for trips, I must confess, I tend to be an overpacker. Over the years as I’ve leaned toward more basics and a minimal wardrobe, my luggage has gotten lighter. (Which was perfect, leaving room for shopping in New York.) This What I Wore post, isn’t quite as seasonal as I expected it to be. New York was unseasonably cold with the exception of our last few days. It made layering essential throughout the trip. Regardless, I think we hit the perfect note of on trend looks, staying warm, and I loved the trick we used for our night at the theater.

Look 01: Rainy Days Exploring The Sights

While in New York, layers and comfort come first. However, I love looking chic and not like a tourist. When we were exploring the first few days it was rainy and cold. Insert my hooded cotton utility jacket. It’s my favorite when it comes to staying dry in the rain with the hood. Paired with a black skinny jean, plaid button down, and white sneakers, I was ready to explore the city. For a pop of color, I added a red lip and some simple jewelry. Due to the humidity and not wanting to do much with my hair when it came to the rain, put it up in a simple top not.  Lastly, let’s talk about this bag. When in New York as long as you’re where there’s people you’re perfectly safe. However, I love carrying my camera in a bag that looks less conspicuous. This bag has straps to carry on your forearm and a longer strap to wear as a crossbody or on the shoulder, making it perfect for quickly shooting photos on the street in transit.

Look 02: Keeping it Fresh in Brooklyn

When going to Brooklyn, it’s always good to pick a look that you love and feels a bit more trendy. It was going to be a slightly warmer day while walking a lot so I opted for light layers and my favorite pair of Nikes. This outfit is one that I love and wear often. There’s something about the combination of the merlot, gray, and black colors that feels super smart. The ripped jean and Nikes give the look a bit of edge and keep basics looking fresh.

Look 03: A Night at the Theater

When we arrived to New York, the temperatures had taken an unexpected drop since my packing in California. (I had a week in the Midwest before heading to New York.) While I would l love to say that I packed many options for cooler weather, I definitely did not. My solution for the night out at the theater. Layering a dress over black skinnies and pairing them with a great heel. The silk dress has an amazing drape and looked like an oversize tank with a few simple tucks. It was a trick that saved the night and was perfectly appropriate. I’m in love with these heels. With the nude color and suede material, they cross through seasons perfectly.

Luggage has been getting an overhaul with recent products and we’re incredibly thankful. This carrier goes luxe with the smart olive color, high lacquer, and a few USB ports on the top to keep all of your devices charged. (After walking through the Las Vegas airport countless times, I can’t tell you how thankful I am for this feature.

I love a smart shoe that can be dressed up or down. This shoe is no exception. With aeration in the front it breathes, and adds a bit of style with the slight contrast of the gray and white.

In summer time and high heat, it’s best to think in light layers. This chambray shirt is composed of a linen blend, keeping things tight. Pair with your favorite pair of chinos and leather sandals for a summer night out. Headed to the office, grab your favorite pair of shoes and dark denim, you’re good to go.

After a long day at the lake or beach, we’re ready for a cozy layer to spend by the evening’s bonfire. In a simple neutral, this pullover is great and has a bit of edge with the shoulder pocket.

These boardshorts are great for hiking, kayaking, or surfing. Whether sand, surf, and lakes, are your thing, they do the work.

A lightweight tee in a fresh color.

We can’t tell you how much we love our Warby Parkers. With an at-home try on feature you can try the frames to your face, playing with 5 frame options prior to ordering. We think this is a brilliant concept and love the colored mirror lenses they’ve been rolling out this summer.

When looking a bag for gear, look no further than Peak Designs. This is a bag we swear by, great for adventures, and pro photographers alike. With room for 3 lenses, a camera body, and laptop, it does the work you need. Take out the dividers and you have a fantastic interior for any daytrip.

Finish off your day of sun-filled adventures and relax with a libation from this copper flask. It’s beautiful and perfect for whatever your drink of choice might be.

Help! My Wardrobe Is a Black Hole

When it comes to basics, capsule wardrobes, and fashion trends, it’s easy to steer towards black. After two years of living in Northern California, I’ve realized that my wardrobe has quickly shifted to stark neutrals and my closet has become a black hole. (I own 4 pairs of the same black Madewell skinny jeans and wear them almost every day of the week.) As summer is approaching, it’s time to ditch the all black outfits and add a bit of color and spice back into your wardrobe.

Keep reading for a few of our tips and tricks to add a bit of color back to your wardrobe.

Every outfit should have a bit of color, pattern, texture, and shine.

This is our go-to recipe for a fantastic outfit. Play with completer pieces, a variety of neutrals, and a pop of color to add variety. Play with pattern and unexpected neutrals. I love the insertion of olives, blush tones, navy, and camel throughout the year. It compliments basics, while still keeping a palette tight and easy. Every woman has a color that is her color. Right now with my hair and skin tone, navy and emerald look amazing for the season, so we’re running with it. These will be the pops of color in our summer wardrobe and we’re totally okay with it.

Never underestimate the value of a good accessory.

For spring and summer of 2017, bandanas and bold earrings have come back with some staying power. Find a favorite silk bandana to play with as an accessory. We also love adding color through nail polishes, lip sticks, or an overall palette. It inserts an element of play.

Go to Pinterest to step outside of your box.

If you’re finding yourself in a rut, head to Pinterest for a styling edge. We love the basic outfits we’ve found, but also love the moments of the unexpected. Playing with pattern, print, and cuts are so fun. You should love what you wear and enjoy the compliments throughout the day. Getting dressed should be fun and add some pep to your step.

Find inspiration from high fashion.

Peruse the issues of fashion editorials, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and the catwalk. Note the themes in collections that are released and what you like. What is the wearable element of the editorial shoots. Avoid going costumey or too over the top, by picking one element to adapt.

Ready to branch out but still are thinking capsule wardrobe?

Add a striped tee, bold floral pattern, window pane print, or sweet embroidery detail. Tassels, geometric shapes, and florals are perfectly on trend for the summer season. Choose smart editorial pieces to add in shades of blush, olive, navy, and camel. These are neutrals other than black that will add variety and an can still be used in any capsule wardrobe, paired in looks over and over again.

What are some ways you add variety to your wardrobe? Any ruts you’re currently finding yourself in?
