5 Ingredient Whole Wheat Pitas

There’s nothing quite like fresh bread coming out of the oven. I think I could say the same applies to this recipe and the pita bread that frequently comes out of my oven. I used to be of the notion that many store-bought items tasted the same as the homemade ones. Maybe it was just the ease of convenience, but I definitely was a sucker when it came to this. Now that I make my own whole wheat pitas, I don’t think I’ll ever go back. A perfect pairing for your favorite hummus and gyros filled to the brim. Keep on reading for this simple, 5-ingredient recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 3 C whole wheat flour (I use King Arthur’s Organic or Trader Joe’s)
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 pkt rapid rise yeast
  • 1 1/4-1 1/2 cup of warm water
  • 2 T olive oil

(Ok, so there are six ingredients listed, but water is free, right?)

Directions:

Bloom packet of yeast in 1 cup of warm water. Mix dry ingredients then add yeast and water mixture. Gently mix. Then add needed additional warm water and olive oil. Make sure there is no residual flour in the bowl and all ingredients are forming in a dough ball. Knead 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl and let rise until doubled. Punch down into 8 pieces. Let rest on floured surface for 20 minutes. Roll to 1/3″ to 1/4″ thickness. Bake at 400 for about 5 minutes. (The pitas will puff up with air and collapse once removed from oven.) Cool for a few minutes. If dipping in hummus, cut into triangles (for the perfect dipping shape).
