The Renter’s Dilemma: What to do?

About every year I find myself in the same dilemma. Do I invest in items to make a space feel like home and decorate to my liking? Or do I save and deal with the bad decor?

Around here I still live in a rental shared among 8 other ladies, we all have different tastes and choose where to live each school year.  Yet, as someone who loves to create a beauty wherever I go, it’s so hard to be content in the land of chipped aubergine purple walls, bad plastic
dorm-style lamps, and thrifted mismatched furniture. I didn’t think I would have moved over 10 times in 9 years. I also didn’t think I would have 8 roommates. Needless to say that at the age of 27, I thought my living situation would be very different. I thought I would be living in a house, have a lovely garden with organic food, a pool space, and amazing studio in the back. The house would have a vista of the mountains, be close to the water, full of natural light, and deliberate simplistic style throughout the space. However, the reality is far from that. For the moments where I can’t handle it anymore, I head into my room and place more images on my inspiration board. With whites, wooden textures, beautiful green plants, modern type, and touches of stone, my heart dreams of the day where these ripped pieces of paper and magazine clippings will become more than solely pictures but come to life.

Have any of you found yourself in the same situation?  Do you invest, repaint, and build a space with pieces you really love? Do you settle for big box furniture that falls apart during each move? Or do you find contentment in what you own, love the pieces that make things feel like home, and wait?

I’d love to hear from you! Tell me your tips and tricks for making your space your own in the comments below!
