The College Girl’s Guide: Home Sweet Dorm + Free Printable

You’ve been at school for a month and something is missing. Your room is matched, you’ve taken your first round of tests, and let’s be honest, the laundry is piling up. More than anything, you’re missing a space that feels like home. Today I’ve teamed up with Avery of Holland Avenue Paper, to share a few tips and tricks to make your dorm feel and look awesome without breaking the bank.

Keep on reading for all the details (plus a free printable for your space!)

Hi everyone! It’s Avery from Holland Avenue paper. I love making beautiful spaces. Spaces that exude creativity, light, and the comfort of home. If you don’t leave my space inspired, at peace, and taking some goofy mugshots, then something is wrong. I love puns, tea, and all things pretty. Right now I’m a sophomore at Ozark Christian College and run my creative space and business out of my dorm room. A challenge at times? You bet, but I’m making it work. Every year my dorm gets a little bit better and I’m excited to share my little space with you today.

For your space, I suggest:

Add some lightweight scarves and bunting.

Let’s be honest. Dorm ceilings are ugly. Dorm walls are usually ugly (and often resistant to tape). Hanging lightweight, flowy scarves and scrapbook paper bunting will draw the eye upward, making your space feel bigger and cozier (while covering up those ugly ceilings). Scotch tape and cinderblock walls are not friends, but double-sided sticky photo squares make a great alternative. (If you have drywall in your dorm, Command strips would be a safer option).

Go easy on the photos.

Last year, I hung pictures EVERYWHERE. By the time winter came, the heater made them curl up and some even fell off. Hang larger prints above your bed and save your favorite photos for frames. Your future self will thank you when move-out day rolls around and you don’t have to remove 500 photos.

Goodbye mini fridge… Hello fireplace!

This is a super cheap and easy way to add a lot of coziness to your essential dorm items. I used a piece of black poster board from Dollar Tree and a white chalk marker from Michaels. This is a quick and simple project to cover up the huge white cube in the middle of your room.
