Mixology: Rosemary Bourbon Sours

Happy Friday everyone!
This weekend marks a significant one, being the first weekend in May. There’s something about the glory and grandeur that comes through my hometown this weekend. I usually don’t miss being home too much, but the Derby season is one that makes me long for the Bluegrass state. From fireworks to marathons to parades, this horse race is a big deal and brings forth all the festivities for weeks prior to the event. It’s the time Southern class comes forth with oversized hats and fascinators, dresses, bowties, and all of it’s beauty. Not to mention the horses. They’re stunning. In honor of the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby this weekend, I decided to make a drink using delicious Kentucky bourbon. The tunes chosen for this drink are simple and classic, bringing forth the pride of the Bluegrass.

Let’s get to the races and the recipe after the jump!

Rosemary Bourbon Sours

servings: one drink

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 C ice
  • 2 oz Kentucky bourbon
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 1/2 C water
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary

Directions:

In a small saucepan, add water and sugar. Melt sugar over medium high heat. Once sugar has melted, add sprigs of rosemary and remove from heat. Allow to steep for 10 minutes. Then remove rosemary. Add ice to glass. Prior to juicing lemons, use a paring knife to create twists of lemon peels to use as a garnish. Juice lemon. Add 2 T of rosemary simple syrup. Measure and pour bourbon over ice. Using an additional sprig of rosemary, stir. Add lemon twist as a finishing garnish. Cheers and may your horse win!
