Mixology: Blood Orange Margaritas

Happy Friday everyone!

With the spring season comes a fresh round of seasonal produce. While I haven’t gotten into experimenting with recipes highlighting rhubarb, I absolutely love playing with the arrival blood oranges. The color is incredible and the flavor is divine. These margaritas are no different.

As for the music to pair with the drink, I chose a few pop mavens with Latin flare, inspired by summer nights along the Mexico coast. Perfect for a little dance party while you’re mixing your margarita.

Blood Orange Margaritas

Individual serving

Ingredients:

  • Juice of 2 blood oranges
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 C water
  • 1/2 C simple syrup
  • 1 oz orange liqueur
  • 1/2 C ice
  • 1 oz tequila
  • 2 oz margarita mix (we swear by Trader Joe’s margarita mix)
  • salt or sugar, for the rim
  • Lime wedges, for garnish

Directions:

In a small saucepan over medium high heat, combine sugar and water. Stir until sugar has dissolved to create your simple syrup. Juice limes and blood oranges. (Tip: if you are finding that it is difficult to extract juice from blood oranges, pierce the flesh of the orange in multiple locations before placing face down on the juicer. We found when we did this, we would get double the juice from each orange.) To make the drink, begin by filling a shallow salad plate with water and another with sugar or salt. Dip your glass in the water, then dip your glass in salt or sugar. (I’m a salt girl myself!) Add ice to glass. Then add 1 T of simple syrup. Using a jigger, measure the tequila, orange liqueur, and margarita mix. Add the juice of the lime and blood oranges. Garnish with a lime and enjoy!
