The Makeover Series: The Living Room

living-room_graphic

First, let me tell you a few of the things that I absolutely love about the space. I love the open nature of the traditional Californian architecture of our home. It lends for natural light, allows us to hold large gatherings, flows seamlessly into the other rooms of the home. With vaulted ceilings, the room always is bright and airy.

Above are some of the before pictures of the space. I’m hoping to be able to repaint this space (maybe). If not, I’ll be finding some touch up paint. We’ll be selling a few pieces of furniture and updating the room with accessories and art. While most enter into our home and talk about how “homey” and “cozy” it feels, it feels a lot more like a home for someone in their 40s rather than the hipster 20-something ladies that live here. Continuing with the same vibe from the entryway, our hope is to use color interspersed with neutrals to provide a cozy industrial feeling. Not like the sterile and cold modern interiors of the past, this look has a “lived-in-yet-still-minimal” feel.

I hope to repair some of the damage that has been made by previous renters and brighten up the space and worn appearance of the current neutrals. I’ll be combining a mix of metals, leather, and wood throughout the space. Knowing we’ll be limited by time and money, our hope is to revamp many of the current pieces, DIY, or thrift for replacement items.

The project list (in a perfect world):

  • Paint the room ultra bright white
  • Make picture ledges for above flatscreen
  • Make this copper lamp
  • Make this round wooden shelf
  • Make a coffee table
  • Paint abstract art for above loveseat
  • Create black and white large-scale photograph print
  • Line back of bookshelf with wallpaper
  • Make leather magazine file for additional sheet music storage
  • Install guitar hanger on wall
  • Remove sconces above keyboard
  • Repair keyboard
  • Style and accessorize bookcase
  • Create original artwork and images for picture ledges
  • Purchase decorative pillows and throws to add color to neutral palette
  • Make white cotton floor-length curtains
