Make This Wall Hanging

As it was the first year in our new space, the Christmas decor started from scratch. Choosing a palette anchored by gold, black, and white, this wall hanging is an absolute favorite in our space. When it comes to decorating small spaces, I like to choose a few moments of large visual impact. It keeps things uncluttered, leaves for plenty of negative space, and keeps things on a budget. Less is always more. Located on the same wall as our tree, the wall hanging sits over a low lying bench that holds our books, DVDs, small TV, and folded throws. With a bit of hand lettering and around $5 it is the perfect handmade addition to your Christmas decor. Whether you have a modern Christmas tree made out of fairy lights hung on the wall or you have a real 7 foot spruce, this wall hanging fits into any decor.

Supplies:

  • Black thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Fabric shears
  • 1 yd black cotton fabric
  • wooden dowel rod
  • black cording
  • white paint
  • paint brush
  • chalk

Directions:

Begin by pressing black fabric with an iron. Determine the size you want  your wall hanging to be. I opted to make mine 36 inches wide by 44 inches tall. (This is the full size of your cut fabric. This way I didn’t have to cut down the dowel rod.) Using an iron fold your hem for the side. I left the bottom edge raw fabric for a more natural look. Using a needle and thread sew down the hem the length of the banner and the rod pocket. Press once sown.

Lay underneath the fabric a plastic bag (just in case any paint seaps through). Using chalk sketch out your design. We used holly leaves, babysbreath, and leaves as the repeated elements throughout our circle. In the middle we chose the word Noel. Other words you could use are “believe”, “gather”, or “joy.” If you choose more generic colors, you could use the wall hanging throughout the year.

Next, fill a disposable container with white craft paint. (I’m not planning on washing this, so I didn’t opt to use fabric paint. Feel free to choose whatever paint you like.) Paint in the drawn elements on the banner (Here is where I turn on a few great Christmas movies on Hulu or Netflix. Last night I discovered my childhood favorite, Mrs. Santa Claus on Hulu. Game changer.) Allow to dry.

Insert dowel into rod pocket and cut black cording. Knot a tight loop on each end. Place nail in the wall and hang. Enjoy your beautiful handiwork!
