Make this: Fabric Backed Bookcases

There’s something about this DIY that is brilliant, simple, and timeless. Providing great visual impact for a little bit of money, I love the way these guys turned out. It makes the cheap bookcases from big box stores look custom and all dressed up for a night out. You can’t beat that. Keep on reading to discover how to make this DIY for around $10.

Supplies:

  • Fabric scissors
  • Cutting mat
  • Tape measure/yard stick
  • Pencil or chalk
  • Foam core
  • Exacto knife/utility knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Fabric (I chose a navy and white pattern from the Nate Burkus line at Joann’s, use your coupons, watch sales and this DIY really is $10, I promise!)

Directions:

Using the tape measure, figure out the total length and width of your bookcase. Our bookcase was already assembled and one shelf couldn’t be removed. Therefore, I had to make two fabric wrapped panels rather than one. Figure out the quirks of your bookcase and measure accordingly.

Cut fabric according to measurements adding an additional 1″ border around the perimeter. This will give you extra fabric to wrap and adhere to the foam core.

Cut your foam core to the same measurements. I used two pieces duct taped together to get the height I needed.  Wrap fabric with foam core and adhere with a hot glue gun.

Now let’s attach it to the bookcase. If you’re looking to adhere it permanently use 3M strips. If you are looking for something that can be changed out periodically, use the shelves to wedge the fabric panels in place. This worked really well for me.

Now it’s time for the fun part! Style out your bookcase with your favorite books, memories, and an occasional deer antler. I love the way this bookcase turned out. It’s situated in the corner by a window and recliner, creating the perfect reading nook for a blanket and early morning cup of coffee.
