Burger of the Month: Red, White, and Blackened

With it being the month of July, I decided for this month’s burger to be inspired by patriotic colors- red, white, and blue. This is a different spin on the typical burger toppings with caramelized red onions (red), the creamy chevre goat cheese (white), and blackened turkey burger (blue).

Red, White, and Blackened Turkey Burger

yield: 4 burgers, 8 sliders

Ingredients:

    • 1 lb fresh ground turkey
    • 1 small red onion, 3/4 in thin rounds, 1/4 diced
    • 1 T olive oil
    • 4 T cajun seasoning, 2 T for ground turkey and 2 T mayo
    • Fresh ground black pepper
    • 1 t paprika
    • mayonnaise
    • 1 beefsteak tomato, sliced
    • 1 head of organic romaine lettuce, shredded
    • Pretzel rolls
    • Sea salt
    • 2 oz of goat cheese

Directions:

In a bowl, combine ground turkey, diced onion, and cajun seasoning. Shape into four 1/4 lb patties or 8 sliders. Sprinkle with mixture of pepper, cajun seasoning, and paprika on each side. When flipping apply additional seasoning. Place on grill and cook thoroughly. In a side burner, add thin rounds of onion, fresh ground salt and pepper, and olive oil. Allow onions to caramelize and cook down for 8-10 minutes. Meanwhile, take 4 T of mayonnaise and add cajun seasoning. Mix thoroughly. Slice pretzel rolls in half, lightly sprinkle with water, and lightly coat the tops with sea salt. Warm buns through in the oven.

To assemble the burgers: spread each side of the roll with mayo. Place the burger on the bottom, then a tomato, a bit of caramelized red onion, shredded lettuce, a slice of goat cheese, and the top of the roll. Place a toothpick in the middle and enjoy!!
