Adventure in Trinidad

Around every month or so I find the incredible need to go on adventure. Call it wanderlust or whatever you may like, the feeling is legitimate and becomes a craving. This month was no different and took a different note, as I headed to the ocean rather than the mountains. The coast is around a 3 hour drive from me, so it was a simple day trip.

I had been to the Pacific Ocean in Northern California and along the Oregon Coast as a child, but had never ventured this far south on California’s coastline. Trinidad State Beach did not disappoint. With stunning sea cliffs, seals, and a few whales, our hike to the shore was well worth it. On the trail, we found various kinds of moss, pines, small redwood trees, and a few lookout points. Knowing there was more to be had (and hopefully some better options) we kept on venturing to the trail’s end. Knowing we wanted to have the best views of the ocean possible, we found a path with a small wooden opening. This was the trail that led us to views of sea cliffs for miles, rock formations, and wildlife. This was a less commonly used trail, and ended up on a beautiful cliff all to ourselves for hours. It was absolutely amazing.

It was on this cliff that my friend and I found ourselves in excellent talks about life, our faith, and what this season holds. We embraced the silence and found ourselves incredibly comfortable with one another. Knowing that silence can be embraced by the truest of friends, we spent hours looking at the vastness and power of the ocean, standing in awe of the beauty of creation.

Knowing the day wouldn’t be complete without actually getting in the ocean, we headed back to the trailhead and drove to the nearest shore access. There’s something about playing in the ocean that brings a child-like spirit to your heart and shows the fullness of joy unlike any other. While the water was cold (very) and the tide was coming in, it didn’t stop us or the need to play. Our clothes were soaking wet by the end, but every second was worth it. We wrapped up our day, eating seafood and finishing it off with local, organic ice cream.

Next time you’re along the coast of California and looking for a laid-back coastal town, be sure to include Trinidad as one of your stops.
